Monaco - Europa 2009 Astronomy Issue (Galileo and Grimaldi). Francesco Grimaldi (1618-1663) italian physicist and mathematician, was the first to describe the diffraction of light. He drew an accurate map of the Moon whose nomenclature is still used by astronomers. The Grimaldi crater on the Moon is named after him. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was an italian physicist and astronomer whose achievements include improvements to the telescope in 1609 and consequent astronomical observations. His support for the heliocentric theory got him into trouble with the Roman Catholic Church and supporters of geocentrism.
